"...many bottles of water come from city tap water"

Some water problems and pollutants may be in your tap water even if the water treatment plant has met all of the Safe Drinking Water Act standards.

An estimated 53 million Americans rely on water from private wells. While most of this water is safe to drink, groundwater contamination has been documented in all 50 states.

Five Steps to Water Filtration

To begin your search for the right water filter or purifier, follow these five steps:

  1. Have your drinking water tested, either by a professional lab or using a home test kit.
  2. Decide if you prefer “hard” or mineral-free water. reverse osmosis and steam distillation units remove minerals from water.
  3. Identify the size of the system you need. Some systems will produce a limited amount of water per day. Other options may run continuously but require filters that need replacing periodically. Look at your family’s daily volume of water usage and double it so that you have enough even in the hot seasons.
  4. Find the best price with the highest reliability and a dependable warranty.
  5. Only consider products that have been certified by an independent testing lab to do what they claim to do. The two largest of these labs are United Laboratories, Inc. (UL) and the National Safety Federation (NSF). Avoid products that say “tested to” EPA or lab standards and insist upon actual certification. Only then can you be sure that the information is true and has been qualified by a not-forprofit, independent lab.
